On January 31st, a group of emcees tore down Brooklyn’s Shea Stadium. The music was accompanied by an art show organized and curated by Hiss.

I circled the block of the seemingly desolate, industrial part of Williamsburg, unsure of if I had gotten to the spot or not. I parked up the block from the non-descript building and sat in my car. There were people moving trunks in from outside. This was the place. I gathered my stuff and made the quick, frigid walk. Inside I met Hiss and got the lay of the land as far as hanging was concerned. After setting up, I saw some familiar faces (and art) start filing in. It was inspiring seeing such a diverse group of work and styles in one place. From Lungebox and Mister Guh’s tight-lined, super clean illustrations to Cosbe’s frenetic installation made from salvaged trash. From Hiss’ signature dead-eyed cats and creepy girls to King Amsterdam’s realistically rendered painting of Nikki Minaj and a Sega Genesis system. The “get in where you fit in” style of hanging gave the show an aweome DIY feel. The art was up for an hour and a half before the music started which was gracious of Shea Stadium. The place was full. Soon the lights were killed and those in attendance took the ride. For the next two hours trippy hippie rap, aggressive socio-political commentary, hip hop crooning and weirdo anthems blared. It was an awesome show and by the time it was over my ears were still ringing on the way home. Thank you to Shea Stadium for hosting us. Thank you to Hiss for putting the art show together. Shoutout to all the artists that showed work and the people who came to support.
