Saturday night walking up to a somewhat isolated Frost Street. Through the open window entrance of Cluster Wall you can already make out the heads filling up the space, a little color dashed in the background for the gallery’s launch party. The beat and bass of the the chatter inside grows. I stop and check the names scribbled and slapped on the dumpster outside the party – Gold Poo, Selz, Alski. Just for good fun I slap on “A Color Green” and walk in.
Catch a few recognizable faces in the crowd: ChrisRWK, Jilly Ballistic, The Drif hanging out in the comfortably crammed space – it’s a dope turn out for a launch that reaffirms what we all know by now – ‘street art’ ain’t going anywhere (and I’m not talking about some bullshit reality 'Throwdown’).
Grab a free Lion or two from the bar and take it all in – the main focus of the show is a masterful collab between Jilly, Chris and John Paul O'Grodnick who’s color serves as the background for a wall-sized canvas sporting Chris’ infamous robots and Jilly’s retro gas-masked family.
The premiere collab is worth the visit alone, but with a line-up that also includes ELLE, ASVP, Solus, Joe Iurato, London Kaye and ORYX the space is buzzing well after I leave. Before I head out, I have the chance to finally meet ChrisRWK face-to-face and thank him for the inspiration. We shake hands and say goodbye when a hooded dude, paint on his hands, walks up and hands me a rolled print. I open it up and find a 'Hektad vs. Banksy’ stencil. 'Yo, you Hektad?’ I stupidly ask. He smiles and walks away before I can say anything. I tuck the print in my jacket pocket and stroll out, ready to get back to work.
Thanks to Cluster Wall, Evian Tobias and all the artists for the night and motivation.
